One Click: Portable

Venturing into the realm of Hipsterdom can be a strange and dangerous adventure. One can come out unscathed and as able to function as they were before, or else with obnoxiously out-of-date non-prescription glasses and a dapper mustache tattooed on their index finger. Portable is one such adventure. Upon entering the website and noticing the versatile number of options displayed under a simplistic logo, it’s hard not to think, “I am going to be wasting days on this site”.

Moleskine at the ready?

Explaining exactly what the website is proves to be a difficult task. It’s about everything, so the best generalization one can give it would have to be ‘Culture’ (even though ‘Culture’ is an option on the home page, I digress). Upon nosing through a few links, that critical feeling begins to ebb away and it becomes easier and easier to enjoy the site. Sure, it still has that ‘here is this, you probably haven’t heard of it’ quality to some of its posts, but it encourages you to become familiar with whatever your looking for. The site doesn’t seem opposed to the mainstream (the article currently in my tabs bar is ‘Who is Ryan Gosling, Anyway?’), but instead tries giving lesser known artists a chance for the spotlight.

It’s a very casual site, with subjects that sound like they were brought about over lunch. They’re fun and critical, a lot of the time (i.e. Why (Most) Fashion Films Suck), but not to the point where the reader (presumably one who likes fashion films) thinks, “Good lord this person is a jerk”. The critiques are ribald, at worst, remaining fun for anyone who wishes to read them, regardless of their opinion.
